Italy Tour and Sketchbook-Travel Journal Workshop with Paul Jackson, AWS, NWS

Rome, Florence and Venice

Itinerary

Day 1: Board your overnight transatlantic flight.

Day 2: Rome, Italy.
Paul meets you at the airport in Rome with transportation to our hotel. After checking in and getting refreshed, Paul will spend some time discussing reference photography and offer pointers on your camera. The remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 3: Sunrise in Rome.
For those still suffering from jetlag, this first morning outing should be easy. We’ll meet just before sunrise and venture out to capture some dramatically lit Italian street scenes.( Optional) Later we will meet in the courtyard of the Vatican for a sketchbook lesson, and spend an hour exploring/sketching around the Vatican. Those who want to visit the Vatican museum will then have guided sightseeing including headsets, visit St. Peter’s Basilica and Square, the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel. Afterwards, we will visit the Colosseum and Roman Forum. For another awesome reference-gathering opportunity to sketch and photograph.

Day 4: Early morning light. Paul will lead an optional photo-safari of the streets of Rome, culminating with a sketching opportunity at the famous Trevi Fountain. Some of Paul’s favorite stops include: The Tiber river. the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and The Victor Emanuel Monument. Rest of the day at your leisure.

Day 5: Rome-Florence.
Travel to Florence by Eurostar train (first class) transfers from/to hotels. Paul will critique your sketchbooks and offer individual advice.

Day 6: Florence.
Sketching at the Duomo! A climb to the top of Giotto’s tower (optional) for the best view of Firenze! Morning guided sightseeing including headsets, visit Michelangelo’s David in the Academy of Fine Arts, the cathedral and Signoria Square.

Day 7: Florence.
Full day at your leisure. Possible options include a trip to Siena, the Uffizzi Gallery, the Ponte Vecchio, the Pitta Palace and Boboli gardens

Day 8: Florence-Venice.
Travel to Venice by high-speed Eurostar train (first class); transfers from/to hotels. Paul will critique your sketchbook and assign a personalized sketching session for the following day.

Day 9: Venice.
Early Morning (optional) Paul takes you to the ultimate photo/sketching location, Piazza San Marco at dawn. Morning guided sightseeing including headsets: visit St. Mark’s Square and Basilica, Doges’ Palace and the Bridge of Sighs, glassblowers’ demonstration. Sunset sketching at Piazza San Marco!

Day 10: Venice.
Full day at your leisure. Options include trips to Burano, Torcello, and Murano, a gondola ride in the Grand Canal, or seeing the lights of this fabulous city by moonlight. Final critique, dinner! And late night!

Day 11: Your homebound flight arrives the same day.

Italy Tour and Sketchbook-Travel Journal Workshop with Paul Jackson AWS NWS

Rome, Florence, Venice
September 24 - October 4, 2008

Cost for 11-day trip will range between $4,092 - $4,326. Included in this cost: Flights from Kansas City with one connecting flight to Rome, return flights from Venice with one connecting flight to Kansas City. Buffet breakfast daily, Local Host service in each city; city maps; sightseeing and transportation as outlined in the day to day itineray. This also includes transfers to/from hotels. We will travel by Eurostar train between cities and this is also included. The hotels are three or four star. Our trip will also include a workshop with Paul Jackson NSW AWS - Traveling with your Sketchbook Journal to Rome, Florence and Venice. There are optional excursions that can be added to our original vacation plans once we are on our tour. This will allow some individuality to your tour or a time to relax.

Recommended Supply list:

  • A brand new sketch book. This will be your constant companion on our Italian adventure. Your sketchbook will tell a visual story of where we have been and what we have seen. It will also serve as reference material for future paintings. I will be carrying a leatherbound sketchbook of 260lb watercolor paper. Marla will be making more of them if anyone is interested. I'll send a photo of mine!
  • Pencils. Nothing fancy, just a bunch of #2's or 2B's
  • Pencil Sharpener. Small, compact, manual
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Fine point sharpies
  • Travel palette. There are many tiny travel palettes available. Find one that has the colors you want. I will be using a winsor & Newton travel palette with whatever colors it comes supplied with.
  • Brushes. At least 2 round watercolor brushes. You choose the sizes
  • Water containers
  • Camera. and all it's accessories. Don't forget extra memory cards or film. Lens cloth, batteries, etc.

These are the required basics. bring anything else you think you need and want to carry.

We will be sketching on location in scenic areas. Be prepared for plein air conditions! We probably won't spend more than an hour in one location, so wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Also remember, this is meant to be a fun experience ... so if you need a break ... take a break and enjoy your surroundings.

Important Dates for Italy Tour Group:

  • 01/17/08 - This is complete. A Land Block Deposit due.
  • 05/26/08 - 120 days prior, names and $200 per person (plus insurance costs of $119 if you want ot purchase this). Any unsold space will be released at this time. We must have commitments by this time for the group air rate.
  • 06/25/08 - 90 days prior - Last day to cancel without penalities. Last day to get individual deposits and insurance refunded.
  • 07/20/08 - 65 days prior. Final payment is due
