Italy - Assembly - Site - Studio

Site

To prepare the site for installation, it was necessary to move several utility lines and make allowances for drainage.

The circular pad that willhold the mosaic is actullay thirty feet in diameter and over four feet thick. It is prestress with tension cables and numerous overlapping sections of reinforcing steel. University engineers assure us that an earthquake could level every building on campus and still not damage the mosaic pad.
The final assembly for the mosaic sections will take place on site under this tent. We will be covering the sides during the final assembly phase.
The mosaic is surrounded by bricks that will carry the names of supporters and contributors. Contributions for these bricks are accepted through the alumni center.
When completed the finished the mosaic will resemble the digital concept above and will be the largest single image smalti tile mosaic in the United States.
